Weather in Lagos

Lagos weather is not a background condition — it shapes how the city moves. The rainy season (April to October) brings flooding that can make the mainland impassable. The harmattan (November to February) blows dry, dusty air from the Sahara, coating everything in a fine haze and making the air visible. Between them, Lagos runs on heat and humidity. The city dresses for this: light fabrics, layers that can be shed, umbrellas carried regardless of the sky.

Best time to visit

December to February. The harmattan season is dry and cooler — temperatures drop to a manageable 25–28°. The haze can be atmospheric rather than oppressive.

What to know

Lagos rainy season flooding is serious — some routes become impassable within 30 minutes of heavy rain. Always check the forecast before travelling across the city in May–September.

ROOF insight

"Harmattan dust haze creates extraordinary sunsets over the Lagos Lagoon. If you're there in December or January, the evening light is unlike anything else in West Africa."
