Weather in Istanbul
Istanbul straddles two continents and its weather reflects that duality — Mediterranean warmth on the European side, more continental variation on the Asian side. The Bosphorus creates its own microclimate, with strong winds (the poyraz from the north) that can make even warm days feel sharp. Summers are hot and increasingly dry. Winters are mild but can bring snow, which transforms the minarets and the Bosphorus in a way that stops the city.
Best time to visit
April–May and September–October. Warm, clear, and manageable crowds.
What to know
The poyraz wind from the northeast can drop temperatures dramatically and create rough conditions on the Bosphorus. A 25° day with poyraz can feel significantly colder.
"Snow in Istanbul is rare and magical. If the forecast shows it while you're there, rearrange your plans to be outside."
